Seriously, what does Google alerts do? I am pot familiar with what it is. Help?

You can sign up for Google Alerts if you have a Google (gmail) account. You let them know the key words you are interested in and when articles having those key words appear, they send you an alert. Daxas was something we were interested in, so we asked to be alerted whenever Google found some information on it. They very often pick up posts from the Pioneer forum.
