Two new genes associated with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) have been identified by a collaborative team of scientists from GlaxoSmithKline (GSK), DukeUniversityMedicalCenter and leading COPD researchers from around the world. The study results, published on-line in ?PLOS Genetics,? suggest that people with these gene variants carry a very high risk of developing COPD if they smoke.

These results provide a major step forward in the understanding of the COPD disease process, and offer the potential to lead to improved diagnostic tests and novel treatments for this devastating disease
