An agreement on funding stem cell research is closer than previously thought. A change in direction on financing stem cell research by US President Barack Obama has excited the American scientific community, starting with the major universities in California, including the San Francisco State, San Jose’ University, Stanford, and Berkeley. This time it will be the California Institute of Regenerative Medicine (CIRM) to open its wallet, ready to fund grants worth 58 million dollars to groups and researchers studying stem cells.

CIRM is funded by taxpayers, not Barack Obama. I guess I am not seeing this news as anything earth shattering and it's also misleading. The scientific community for the most part supported Obama because they thought it would mean access to more funding. That remains to be seen. There also comes a time when taxpayers are simply tapped out and they expect to see something for their hard earned dollars when it comes to research. Researchers love the thought of an unending stream of funds to use as they please. It's time to take a look however and see just how that money is being spent. CIRM was sold to the public with the promise of the possibility of cures for many horrific diseases. It has been plagued with a multitude of problems that we have reported here. There have also been some individuals and universities that have profited quite nicely from it. Here are a few of the previous stories that have been posted:

It's not all negative news, however, but so far CIRM hasn't delivered and the taxpayers are getting antsy.

There are also a lot of supporters that would like to see a lot more adult stem cell research rather than just embryonic stem cell research. Don't forget that President Obama appointed Margaret Hamburg as the head of the FDA. She promised more regulation and that's what we have gotten. Our own stem cells are now regulated as drugs thanks to the FDA. Patients are now faced with less choices than we had before this regulation was put in place.
