Further, the cells have a nasty tendency to become cancerous or to form teratomas -- meaning "monster tumors." While usually benign, these can grow larger than a football and often contain hair and teeth. Yech



Actually the tumor issue can be circumvented -- just differentiate the embryonic stem cells into whatever somatic cell is needed and transplant or implant, e.g., if treating heart damage following a heart attack differentiate the embryonic stem cells into cadiomyocytes. There is also a line of research that indicates that co-transplanting embryonic stem cells with bone marrow derived stem cells reduces or perhaps eliminates the odds of tumor development (teratomas).
