RNL BIO Rescues a College Student from Autoimmune Hearing Loss
SEOUL, South Korea, Nov. 4 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- RNL BIO Co., Ltd, (www.rnl.co.kr) a leading biopharmaceutical company specialized in adult stem cell therapeutics announced today that it treated an American college student who was suffering from autoimmune hearing loss and she gained her hearing back in two months after treatment.

Chloe Sohl, an 18-year old college student who majors in music at University of Arizona was suffering from autoimmune hearing loss since the age of 15. Although there is no known cause of her diagnosis, it is a serious disease that slowly damages the organs. Chloe's father, Dr. Bertram Sohl is a director of Obstetrics and Gynecology at St. Mary's Medical Center in Long Beach, California and her mother, Dr. Veronique Jotterand is an ophthalmologist and Vice Chief of Staff at Miller Children's Hospital in Long Beach, California. Even though Chloe's parents are medical doctors, they felt helpless and devastated about their daughter's progressive condition. They tried every possible medication, but Chloe's condition got worse. The only options they had were for Chloe to use a hearing aid and for her to take medication to slow down her autoimmune system. Dr. Tai June Yoo, a professor from University of Tennessee and a medical advisor of RNL BIO explained as specialist in immune diseases, that if Chloe continues to take strong medication like Methotrexate and Humira, there will be high chances for further serious complications without guarantee of improvement. Her doctors even recommended Chloe to receive Cochlea implant that would enable Chloe to hear some sound, but would irreversibly destroy the middle ear, which scared her parents.

Ever since Dr. Sohl met Dr. Jeong Chan Ra, CEO of the firm, they began to see hope in Chloe's hearing. Dr. Ra established RNL Life Science in California to promote stem cell banking and to introduce the benefit of stem cell therapy through medical tourism. He held a seminar on April 20, 2009 with 30 doctors from Southern California on the topic of adult stem cell therapy in San Pedro, California. Among the attendees was Dr. Sohl, who was stunned at RNL BIO's achievements in stem cell therapeutics that was able to improve various conditions by stem cell treatment. The principle of adult stem cell therapy is actually simple because it utilizes the natural healing ability of our own body.

"Every part of our body already contains stem cells that play a key role in maintaining and repairing our own structural and functional system. Due to aging, the amount of stem cells decrease and that's why the time and ability to recover from cellular damage slow down and chronic and degenerative symptoms develop as time goes by. The principle of our stem cell treatment is to make enough amount of stem cells and to bring them back to the patient's own body. Surprisingly, we found that stem cell therapy has great potential to treat autoimmune diseases," explained Dr. Ra.

Earlier this year, RNL BIO treated patients with atopic dermatitis. Other autoimmune disorders have also been treated in addition to atopy. Many stem cell researchers have demonstrated that mesenchymal stem cells modulate the immune system and suppress inflammation as a major therapeutic effect. Chloe's hearing loss falls into this example. This treatment was supposed to soothe any hypersensitive immune response and repair damaged organ so that she might hear again.

Dr. Sohl was very intrigued for his daughter to receive stem cell treatment, but his wife was skeptical about Chloe getting stem cell therapy at first. Chloe's physicians even discouraged Chloe from receiving stem cell treatment. However, they were able to decide to try this treatment for Chloe from seeing RNL BIO's successful outcomes. The great safety profile of RNL stem cell therapy made them comfortable. Chloe felt assured to accept the therapy.

Chloe said, "I felt very good about it. I felt very optimistic. I've had IV's every month since I started to lose my hearing. It was good because I knew this could work unlike the other ones. I just felt very optimistic about the whole procedure."

Currently, stem cell transplant is not allowed in some countries like the United States, some European countries, and South Korea unless it gets a market approval through clinical trials as new pharmaceutical drugs undergo. Chloe had to travel outside of the United States and to Japan or China where RNL established stem cell clinics. More than 2,000 patients with various diseases have been treated with stem cell therapeutics through RNL BIO since 2008.

Chloe visited Dr. Won, a plastic surgeon in Los Angeles to harvest her fat tissue around her belly button in last June. Then the tissue was sent to the laboratory RNL BIO in Germantown, Maryland, where they isolated stem cells, put them in liquid nitrogen shipper and transported them to RNL BIO in Seoul, Korea. It took them a month to expand her stem cells to a sufficient amount enough to treat her hearing loss. Chloe's family planned a trip to Korea during their summer vacation. At last, on July 27, 2009, they visited Korea for two weeks. The stem cell treatment took place in Japan -- 600 million cells were administered by three injections with 5 day intervals. The cells were injected into her veins and auditory system.

Chloe's hearing was tested two months after the procedure was completed on October 16, 2009. The results were spectacular. The left side of her ear improved 50% from not being able to hear at all. The right side of her ear gained almost complete hearing.

Dr. Jotterand could not bear her excitement, "Now it's just been a 180 degree turnaround. She's just enjoying life and enjoying being a freshman at the university. She's just having a great time and it's just wonderful to see the joy in her own face and in her life."

Chloe's parents invited Dr. Ra and other members of RNL BIO to their home in Long Beach to celebrate her miracle. They expressed their gratitude and felt like they received a gift of miracle. Thus, they promised to support RNL BIO's promoting stem cell business in the United States.

President and CEO of RNL BIO, Dr. Ra stated, "Through this great discovery and research of adult stem cells, I am committed to create and develop therapies that will not only prevent diseases, but ensure a better quality of life for all."

This is a great article Cynthia and one that is so hopeful for others. Too bad the U.S. is so far behind that she could not have treatment here.

This news is all over the internet and in my blog. I plan to get stem cells outside the USA in 2011 or shortly after.

I may get stem cells soon, me and my family are still researching and will let you know when we decide. What made you decide? What is your hearing loss and audiogram like?

I am leaving tomorrow to a hospital in Guangdong China to learn more details. Beike Biology provides stem cells for this hospital.

The reason that I would like to be a pioneer instead of waiting is that waiting could likely lower the chance to get improved. I lost my hearing for 13 months ago, and I don't wanna wait too long to miss the best time for treatment. My hearing loss is around 70-85db in my left year, and above 110db in my right ear.

I take it that you had completely perfect hearing then in the course of 13 months you lost a lot of it. Do you know what caused such a sudden drastic loss in your hearing? Is it attributed to a medication, injury, autoimmune or illness?

How did you decide on a clinic in China verses some of the other clinics?

I lost my hearing 13 months ago due to sudden hearing loss, no exact reason, could be due to fatigue caused by long international trips. Not sure if it could be attributed to autoimmune problem.

China is my home country, where I could pay less for the therapy than foreigners. My treatment would start in 10 days.

My first stem cell treatment was done this morning. Right now, 6 hours after the treatment, although I am not 100% sure, I can feel slight improvement in my hearing. I can make simple conversation with people without hearing aid at very small distance if they shout a little bit. More significantly, the sound I heard is smoother and easier to understand than a couple of days back, when loud sound was very scratchy.

Hearing

I was wondering how STEMCELLDEAF has been doing since Dec 2009? I have been in contact with RNLBIO regarding stem cell treatment for hearing loss. They have 4 new patients undergoing stem cell treatments. They said in Sept they would have results.

It takes alot more than 6 hours, but now that enough time has elapsed, how's your hearing? What was your before/after audiograms? I want to learn all I can because I plan to get stem cells as soon as next year.

I also wonder! RNLBIO treated Chloe and her results have been amazing! I wonder how Chloe is doing? Is her hearing still as good? I also wonder what degree of hearing loss those 4 patients have and the cause of their hearing loss. I was born with about 95db loss, it's now over 110db.

Apologize that I did not show up for a long time. I quickly summarize my treatments and results here. Hope it is helpful to others.

a) I accepted 6 IV injections of MSC stem cells in Jan. 2010 within 2 weeks. The hospital claimed there are at least 10 million stem cell per injection, thus in total I got more than 60 million MSC stem cells (from umbilical cord blood). Note the number is around one tenth of Chloe Sohl got.

b) I can feel slight improvement during the treatments, but no more after that.

c) Pre- and after- audiograms show my hearing was improved by 5-10 db per channel on average. I had expected 20-30db improvement, thus I am somehow disappointed. This is also why I did not update here for a long time.

d) My hearing was quite stable after the treatments, I took 3 after audiograms, no difference (<<5db per channel on average). This makes me believe the 5-10db improvement is real.

I guess, the number and type of stem cells, and how the stem cell are delivered could all make differences. Any of you know how RNL delivered fat derived stem cells for Chloe Sohl?

Glad to know RNL is treating more patients. If more positive news coming out like Chloe Sohl, I will be glad to take another try.

How much was the cost? How long did it take for your hearing to improve? Can you scan and post your audiograms here? I am curious how large your hearing loss was before stem cells. Has the improvement in hearing resulted in you turning the volume on your HAs down? What about hearing new sounds and understanding more speech?

My hearing loss was 60-85 db before the treatment. 85db hearing loss at 1000 HZ, and better at lower and higher frequency.

I have to say that, 5-10db improvement does not make much difference.

Florida to do stem cell treatments

I received an e-mail on 4/21 from RSCI which is a place that helps people find clinics that do stem cell treatments. Run by "Don Margolis"...not sure if any of you have heard of him. Anyway, the e-mail is signed "Suzenne, RSCI Coordinator
Repair Stem Cell Institute LLC

Additional info in the e-mail: Type of Cells
Your own bone marrow cells.

Location
Florida, USA

Details
This center?s hearing disorder treatment is new, and so far they have treated about twelve patients, most of whom have experienced significant improvement.

The center has successfully treated patients with other conditions with their own stem cells, and is one of only 10 center?s in the world that the Institute recommends.

Cost US$
$9,500

Cost includes
Treatment in the physician?s facility, pre-treatment consultation, and auditory testing for the first year following treatment at the physician?s facility.

I plan to respond and how many more people have they treated because they claimed to be "booked" for the next two weeks.

Renee - Don Margolis is a broker. He earns a commission for every patient he books at one of his preferred clinics. He is like a travel agent. His operation has been discussed on this forum many times. I do not have a problem with his business as such, but I do have a problem that people are not informed by reading his site that this is exactly what he does. If he does not get paid a commission from a clinic, he is not going to recommend it to anyone seeking stem cell therapy. I believe a person should do their own research first and then if you feel you need someone to book your trip and help with the arrangements, you can contact a broker. Don is not the only one out there doing this. There are other brokers as well, so don't be fooled into thinking that this is anything but a business enterprise for them.
