Dr. Goldstein is one of the discoverers of the "walking molecule" kinesin (see this youtube video it will amaze you ! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=686qX5yzksU ). In his career he started using stem cells to generate different neural tissues and see how kinesin abnormalities correlate to human diseases. He figured out that Alzheimer's patients have abnormalities in kinesin and that you can replicate some of the molecular abnormalities in Alzheimers by reducing kinesin function http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed?term=15731448 .

He is currently Director of the Stem Cell Program at University of California San Diego and a Board Member of ISSCR. In his spare time he wrote the book "Stem Cells for Dummies" and has made numerous national and international television appearances educating the public about stem cells and dangers of rogue stem cell clinics.

Dr. Goldstein has made many scientific discoveries in other diseases such as ALS and Huntington's.

Perhaps most interestingly (in my opinion) he is making stem cells from tissues of patients with sporadic Alzheimer's (through the iPS method http://www.youtube.com/user/cellmedicine#p/u/35/_RLlUdJLy74 ) and from the tissue of Craig Venter whose diploid genome has been sequences and known to contain Alzheimer's susceptibility variants. These stem cells he can then differentiate into different neurons and use them for molecular analysis as an "in vitro" model of real human neural tissue from defined patients with defined pathologies.

You may ask questions via the "chat" function on the lower left hand side of the screen underneath the image on www.thelatestwith.com. Where it says "enter username" enter your name, then click on "thelatestwith" and you will be able to ask questions live.

If you go to www.thelatestwith.com before the show, you can see previous shows and try out the chat function.

Best wishes and see you on Tuesday at www.thelatestwith.com at 3 PM Pacific Tim !
