MAYFIELD HEIGHTS – A new medical procedure being done for first time in our area has people basically healing themselves.

Steve Shopp of Parma wanted to dance pain-free at his 50th wedding anniversary. He had already had one knee replacement surgery. But, for his right knee -- he underwent a non-surgical regenerative medical procedure at Regen Orthopedics.

Dr. Trevor Bullock, orthopedic specialist with Regen Orthopedics said the person’s own stem cells are injected into the injured or damaged area. "And, these cells will actually know what types of cells that the body needs to help rebuild and repair that tissue,” he added.

It can help people with arthritis pain or injury of the knee, back or shoulder. The procedure is done in the office under local anesthesia. And, there is a much quicker recovery than surgical procedures.

"The rehab for the total knee was 12 weeks long. And for this regen orthopedic procedure, it was only to take it easy for 3-4 days, don't do anything extensive for two weeks and after that I was cutting grass in one month," Shopp said. He also danced three polkas and two waltzes nonstop on his anniversary.

The stem cell regenerative therapies are FDA approved. But, they are still in the investigation stage and not currently covered by insurance.
