New findings on stem cell therapy
An international research team has found that the success of adult stem cell therapy depends on the body's ability to repair tissue damaged by ageing.

It's the first time the link has been proven and the finding is expected to give researchers a greater understanding of how to improve stem cell therapy.

The Australian National University's Professor Christopher Goodnow said the discovery would benefit research into diseases like leukemia and diabetes.

"It's opened our eyes very much to this whole issue of the relationship between oxygen, dna damage and age related decline of cells generally," he said.

"That has immediate implications for understanding a whole range of things that contribute to dna damage and probably most pressingly how we improve the way that we use stem cells for example in bone marrow transplants to treat people with leukemia and other forms of cancer."
