An adult stem-cell technology company called BrainStorm Cell Therapeutics has signed an agreement with Mayo Clinic in Rochester to conduct its Phase II clinical trial of NurOwn in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) patients, pending approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

The company announced this week that Mayo's Human Cell Therapy Laboratory "will manufacture the NurOwn cells for their clinical-trial participants."
Two additional study sites are the University of Massachusetts Memorial Hospital and Massachusetts General Hospital.

The company says it is collaborating with Mayo's Dr. Anthony Windebank. According to BrainStorm, Mayo is one of the largest stem cell clinical trial centers in the world. It is conducting 27 trials in Phase I.

The goal of the newly announced clinical trial is to develop novel treatments for ALS, which does not have an effective treatment.

BrainStorm has developed "first-of-its-kind adult stem cell therapies derived from autologous bone marrow cells," according to a company statement.
