FDA is busy, busy, busy

What a timely newsletter. Seems the FDA is keeping itself real busy.

Gaia Health Newsletter
13 August 2010 - Friday the 13th!

The FDA and similar agencies in Europe have been actively pursuing policies that are designed to protect markets for Big Pharma, Agribusiness, and Big Medicine. Though done in the name of the people, these actions are removing individual rights to choose their means of maintaining health, correcting health problems, and even what foods may be eaten.

As much as I've wanted to write about health topics in general, this issue keeps coming to the fore with outrage after outrage. So, this issue is dedicated to raising awareness of what's happening to wrest control of your health and hand it over to a corporate world whose only interest is in profits.

Let's start with this article: http://click.icptrack.com/icp/relay.php?r=45449233&msgid=395160&act=9C1C&c=644430&destination=http://gaia-health.com/articles201/000230-fda-says-walnuts-are-drugs-and-doritos-are-heart-healthy.shtml FDA Says Walnuts Are Drugs and Doritos Are Heart Healthy. The title is not stretching the truth in any sense. It's quite literal. Here's how it starts:

This is a call to action. Your freedom to eat real food?and even to hear the truth about it?are under attack.

In its latest salvo against our health and freedom, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a warning to Diamond Foods stating that their claims for the health promoting qualities of walnuts have moved them from a food to a drug. At the same time, it allows Frito-Lay to advertise its health-destroying chips (crisps in the UK) as "heart healthy".

This is an attack on both your health and your right to free speech. The FDA is not interested in the science. It's not interested in your health. It's not interested in the truth. It's interested only in supporting its corporate masters. To this end, it uses its massive power to shut down the truth and ignore blatant lies when it's beneficial to big corporate players.

Diamond Foods' Walnut Claims

Here's an excerpt from the FDA's letter to Diamond Foods:

"Based on claims made on your firm's website, we have determined that your walnut products are promoted for conditions that cause them to be drugs because these products are intended for use in the prevention, mitigation, and treatment of disease. The following are examples of the claims made on your firm's website under the heading of a web page stating 'OMEGA-3s ... Every time you munch a few walnuts, you're doing your body a big favor.':

"Studies indicate that the omega-3 fatty acids found in walnuts may help lower cholesterol; protect against heart disease, stroke and some cancers; ease arthritis and other inflammatory diseases; and even fight depression and other mental illnesses."
"[O]mega-3 fatty acids inhibit the tumor growth that is promoted by the acids found in other fats ... "
"n treating major depression, for example, omega-3s seem to work by making it easier for brain cell receptors to process mood-related signals from neighboring neurons."
"The omega-3s found in fish oil are thought to be responsible for the significantly lower incidence of breast cancer in Japanese women as compared to women in the United States."
"Because of these intended uses, your walnut products are drugs."
Presto ChangeOh! The FDA has magically transformed walnuts into a drug. Neat trick if you can pull it off?and at this point, they can. The FDA has sent out hundreds of these extortionate letters to food producers big and small. Read the rest of the story.http://click.icptrack.com/icp/relay.php?r=45449233&msgid=395160&act=9C1C&c=644430&destination=http://gaia-health.com/articles201/000230-fda-says-walnuts-are-drugs-and-doritos-are-heart-healthy.shtml

From this basic idea - that they can regulate anything as a drug if a health claim is made for it - the entire cascade of power-grabbing flows. From that point, the FDA has gone on to state that people do not have the right to choose their food or to seek health. Read the following article, which documents that claim: The FDA Says You Have No Right to Freedom of Food

You thought you had the right to choose what you eat? The FDA says you don't. They claim that there is no fundamental right to choose your food or freedom to contract for it. Responding to a Farm-to-Consumer Legal Defense Fund lawsuit, the FDA clearly states that you do not have the right to freedom of choice in your diet.

This article goes on to document a lawsuit against the FDA and the FDA's response, in which it states that there is no right to health or choice of food.

If you still doubt what's happening, then read some of the articles listed below. Each one documents how the FDA or equivalent agency is acting against your rights to eliminate competition against Big Pharma, Big Medicine, and Agribusiness. You are being positioned to be consumers of their products, whether you want to or not.

Heidi Stevenson

Raw Milk Disease Outbreak In Perspective: Tempest in an FDA Teapot--Perhaps you've heard of the claimed raw milk campylobacteria disease outbreak in Michigan recently. It's been hyped to the world by the FDA. However, if you look carefully at the wording, you'll see only that it's 'linked' to raw milk. It's nothing but a tempest in the FDA's teapot.

Raw Milk Source Shut Down, But There's Been No Bad Milk--In what looks more and more like a concerted FDA plan to shut off raw milk supplies, a Michigan raw milk dairy is being forced to shut down. Their supplier is based a short distance away, but it's across a state boundary. That state, Indiana, allows the sale of raw milk, but the FDA's pressure has caused it to stop shipping to Michigan.

DOJ Punishes Big Pharma for Bribing Foreign Doctors, Ignores Corruption Here--Pharmaceutical exec Robert John Dougall has been sentenced to 12 months in prison for paying ?4.5M to Greek doctors. As Director of Marketing at DePuy, now part of megacorp Johnson & Johnson, he bribed Greek surgeons to buy their products. It's a start, but why is the Department of Justice focusing on foreign doctors?

FDA to Control Salt Intake, Not Aspartame or High Fructose Corn Syrup--The FDA plans to control intake of salt, a natural and necessary food. Meanwhile, known killers like aspartame and HFCS are left free to continue their destruction of health. The usual incestuous techniques have led to the latest ploy to hand over our food supply to Agribusiness, and the marketing campaign is in full swing.

FDA Persecutes Raw Milk Dairies: Raids Amish Farm--The FDA is using strong arm tactics on family farms that do their best to produce genuinely healthy milk for customers who care about their own family's health. They have raided an Amish dairy farm with the accusation, "We have credible evidence that you are involved in interstate commerce." There's no accusation that the raw milk they produce is unsafe.

Max Kane Risks Prison for Refusing to Tell Who Sells and Who Buys Raw Milk--Max Kane has been charged with nothing. There is no case being prosecuted against him or anyone else for anything, not even for selling or buying raw milk. Yet, he has been ordered by the state of Wisconsin to inform on his friends. They want him to name people who sell or buy raw milk. He has refused, and for that, he's been under threat of prison.

Doc Who Harms No One Is Punished, But Doc Who Killed Can Practice.--In typical hubristic fashion, the UK's General Medical Council (GMC) has stripped Dr. Sarah Myhill of many of the functions required to care for her patients, while allowing doctors who have killed patients with sloppiness, lies, and egregious errors to continue in practice. She harmed no one, and no such accusation was made. Not a single patient has complained.

Breast Cancer Vaccine Makes Mother's Milk a Disease--Scientists have prevented breast cancer in mice by vaccinating them. There's a bit of a problem, though. It creates antibodies against a vital ingredient in mother's milk. That, of course, doesn't bother the researchers. They're going ahead full steam with plans to test it in women.

GMO Salmon Near FDA Approval - Public's Input Not Wanted--As the FDA nears approval for the first genetically engineered salmon, the public's views on the issue are not wanted. These genetically modified organisms (GMOs) will be the first animals approved for food, but the FDA is treating them like veterinary drugs, so the approval process is not open to the public and none of the documentation is available for inspection.

FDA Tries to Silence Info Documenting Avandia Deaths--The FDA appears to have tried to prevent publication of information documenting a significant increase in deaths and cardiovascular disease from Avandia over its competitor. FDA employee, Dr. Graham, claims that an underhanded trick was used in an attempt to keep his paper, which documents significantly increased Avandia risks, from being published.

FDA Panel Votes to Keep Dangerous Drug on the Market--Evidence be damned! Diabetes drug Avandia offers no benefit over a rival drug, but causes significantly more deaths. In a panel vote that sees no reason to remove the drug from the market, the FDA reveals its true allegiance: Big Pharma.

UK Testing GM Potatoes That Offer No Benefit to Farmers or Eaters--Fanning the flames of fear with the specter of the Irish Potato Famine, the UK is testing genetically modified (GM) potatoes. They have been engineered to resist a fungal blight, which may seem worthy - until you learn that the UK already has blight-resistant potatoes developed through cross-breeding.

Attacks on Raw Foods Accelerate to Police State Levels--With specious claims and a police state mentality, the attacks on raw foods multiply. Well coordinated raids on farms and shops that produce and distribute them are being done to intimidate the producers. They are being informed that it doesn't matter if they're innocent or right, they'll be driven out of business by harrassment, costs to defend themselves, and even prison.

Recall of Supplement Containing Seville Orange Shows Absurdity of FDA's Claims--?The FDA has made Solo Slim sound like a sinister product, using the very real dangers of sibutramine, the drug, to force its withdrawal from the market. The fact, though, is that the natural ingredient is not the same thing as the drug. Genuine concern for the public's health has nothing to do with banning a product for including Seville oranges.
