CT Scans

There have been questions about the safety of CT scans after stem cell treatment. Tonight on ABC News, it was reported that the New England Journal of Medicine is now saying that it is possible that CT scans may be responsible for 2% or all cancers in the next 20 years. According to the article, approximately 1/3 of all CT scans are unnecessary. 20 million adults are exposed annually and 1 million children. Children are most at risk because of the cumulative effect it could have on them if they continue to be exposed to this radiation throughout their lifetime. Dr. Tim Johnson said there was no danger in having a CT scan, but the medical profession is over prescribing them and since they have 100-200 times the amount of radiation of an X-ray, then caution should be used to not use them lightly for every little ache and pain. Dr. Johnson went so far as to say that some doctors are unethically prescribing CT scans for their patients because they own an interest in the facility where the CT scans are done. He said legislation should make this practice illegal, but at this time there is none.
